What to Look for in a Gas Grill

Configuration is the first decision — freestanding or built-in. A freestanding cart grill gives you flexibility and works well for most patios without any construction. A built-in grill head is designed to drop into an outdoor kitchen island and gives you a cleaner, more permanent result. If you're planning a built-in, get your grill head selected early — cutout dimensions vary between models and brands, and your island design needs to account for them. BTU output matters, but it's not the whole story. More BTUs doesn't automatically mean better cooking — what matters is how evenly heat is distributed across the cooking surface. Look for features like dual-level sear plates, flame tamers, or heat zone separators that manage flare-ups and promote even cooking. Cooking grate material affects sear quality and longevity — cast stainless steel and heavy-gauge stainless rod grates hold and transfer heat better than thinner alternatives. Fuel type is a practical consideration: natural gas requires a permanent line but eliminates the need for propane tanks; propane is more flexible on placement. Most grills we carry are available in both configurations. Finally, warranty is worth reading carefully — it's one of the clearest signals of how confident a manufacturer is in their product. Fire Magic, Blaze, and Napoleon all offer strong residential warranties that reflect the quality of what they build.
