Jensen Outdoor “Wood Shield” Frequently Asked Questions
What is Jensen Outdoor Wood Shield and when should I use it?
Wood Shield is a protective treatment from Jensen Outdoor designed for Ipe wood outdoor furniture (and similar premium woods) to help guard against water, food and drink stains on table tops, chair arms, and other wood surfaces. It is best applied after the furniture is new or freshly cleaned.
Which materials and surfaces does Wood Shield work with?
This product is formulated specifically for Ipe wood surfaces (and sometimes other exterior hardwoods) that have been cleaned. The instructions note it should be used in a well-ventilated area and applied to clean, dry wood so that it can provide the water- and food-stain-repellent layer.
How do I apply Wood Shield and how often should I reapply it?
Application: Clean wood surfaces first (wash with mild dish soap and water if needed, rinse, allow to dry). Then in a ventilated area, shake the bottle, apply a thin coat of Wood Shield with a soft cloth to all clean wood surfaces, allow approximately 4 hours dry, then apply a second thin coat. Wait about 48 hours before exposing to moisture.
What benefits does Wood Shield provide for outdoor wood furniture?
By applying Wood Shield you help create a protective barrier on wood surfaces that assists in resisting water-spots, grease, wine, olive oil, and general food or drink stains. It helps keep premium Ipe wood looking fresh and can extend the time between deeper restorations.
Are there any precautions or special care steps I should know about?
Yes – do not apply Wood Shield to dirty, dusty or oily surfaces. The furniture should be cleaned and dry. Work in a ventilated area, wear eye protection and gloves. Also, thicker layers are not better—apply thin coats. Avoid power-washing Ipe wood as it can damage the surface. If the wood already has a dark gray patina and is rough, a light sanding may be recommended before treatment.
Is Wood Shield covered by any warranty or guarantee related to the furniture finish?
Wood Shield is a care accessory rather than a component of the furniture itself, so warranties for the furniture (for example 5-year residential structural warranties) still apply separately. Using Wood Shield is part of the recommended care to maintain finish condition, but it does not in itself alter the furniture manufacturer’s standard warranty terms.
