Delta Heat Charcoal Tray — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Delta Heat Charcoal Tray?
The Delta Heat Charcoal Tray is a heavy-duty firebox accessory built to hold charcoal or wood chunks inside grills like kamado, bullet, or ceramic styles. It helps centralize fuel and improve airflow, making it easier to manage low-and-slow cooking.
What are its dimensions and construction?
This tray is constructed from thick stainless steel with cutouts for airflow and fuel loading. It is sized to fit many kamado-style and barrel grills (exact size depends on the model). It typically accommodates ¼ to ⅓ of a full charcoal load directly in the center while preserving outer ring heat zones.
How do I install and use the charcoal tray?
Remove the grill’s existing fire grate (if tall) or lower portions to accommodate the tray. Place the charcoal tray at the base above the ash or bottom vent so that air can pass underneath. Fill it with your fuel and light. You can add wood or charcoal from the top during cooking without disturbing surrounding zones. The design helps maintain stable, even heat.
How should I maintain and clean it?
After use and allowing complete cool-down, shake or brush off ash and residue. Periodically inspect for warping, corrosion or pitting. Though stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, over time high heat may cause surface oxidation — occasional scrubbing with a nonabrasive brush helps. Store it in dry conditions when not in use.
What are the benefits and limitations of using it?
Because fuel is concentrated in the tray, you use less charcoal while maintaining consistent heat. It also improves airflow and reduces flare-ups. Limitations include that it reduces the space for large fuel loads, and if not compatible with your grill’s geometry it may interfere with airflow or clearances. Also, heavy ash buildup under the tray must be cleaned to keep airflow efficient.
